Hunger Facts
There are over 83,590 children living in poverty in the food bank’s service area.
According to Connect2Help (Help Line), in the last year, calls for food assistance in our community increased by 55% in 2008. Food Stamp information request rose a dramatic 75% in 2008 alone!
In 2008, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana and the network of 400 central Indiana hunger relief charities it serves, distributed 72% more food to hungry Hoosiers than ten years ago.
Although Gleaners’ distribution of food is up 23% since the start of the economic crisis, the Hunger Relief Charities that depend on us for food are serving an average of 36% more people than they were a year ago. We need an additional 1.5 million meals to close the gap.
According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. Over 225,075 people within Gleaners' 20-county service area are living in poverty. (2005 estimates, released in January)
