Testimonials and Stories

Sharing stories from a shared commitment

Thousands of people share Gleaners’ commitment to ending hunger. From experts and legislators to grocers, distributors, volunteers, business leaders and more, they all have experiences that shed light on the ongoing fight.

Here are just a few.

Patty and Melvin Clark

For more than 20 years, Melvin and Patty Clark have run the First Church of the Nazarene food pantry in Martinsville.

In the summer of 2008, their own home was severely damaged by flood waters. But they kept the pantry open. Thanks to the Clarks’ selfless commitment, the pantry distributed emergency food and cleaning supplies at a time of dire need.

The Clarks are a vital link between Gleaners and hungry Hoosiers in Morgan County. We’re proud to be associated with folks like Patty and Melvin, whose extraordinary work and dedication mean that families, children and seniors get the food assistance they need—even in the worst of times.

Sarah Emerson, EdD

Sarah Emerson is a Doctor and Professor Emeritus at Indiana State University. She’s also a Gleaners volunteer.

Volunteers like Sarah are essential. Dr. Emerson serves as Gleaners' liaison to Indiana's Eat Free Initiative, and as a monitor for the Kids Cafe and BackSack programs. She also provides technical assistance.

Their contributions matter—whether it’s specialized knowledge or the willingness to do some salvaging, sorting, lifting and more. That’s why Gleaners appreciates Sarah’s generosity and effort…and Dr. Emerson’s valued expertise.

Creative Street Media Group

Several folks from Creative Street Media Group have given their time and talents to Gleaners. For instance, Ashley Rister, Steven Katzenberger, Marty Foster, Dave Smith and Becky Fisher produced a video about Gleaners and the people we serve.

That emotionally compelling video debuted at Gleaners' Harvest Moon Gala for the nearly 400 donors who attended.

Such in-kind donations allow Gleaners to operate efficiently by "stretching" the cash gifts we receive from other donors. When we don’t spend money on activities and maintenance that aren’t directly part of our mission, we can spend it on those that are.

In-kind donations can be gifts such as warehouse equipment (fork lifts, pallet jacks, office equipment, etc.) or services such as painting, plumbing, facility repairs and much more.
